Project Nim
Project Nim
dir. James Marsh, UK 2011, 93 min

The latest film directed by James Marsh, winner of the Oscar for his Man on Wire.

In November 1973, a baby chimpanzee is born in a cage of a primate research center in Oklahoma. A few days later, when a sedating shot causes its mother to lose consciousness, the whimpering baby chimpanzee is brutally taken away from her. The chimpanzee receives the name Nim and is given to a psychology graduate - herself a mother of three children - who is to raise it as if it were her own child. Thus “project Nim” is born; one of the most radical experiments in history, its aim was to prove that a chimpanzee raised as if it were a human being can be taught to communicate using language.

The all-penetrating light enters every nook and cranny; even the nights become unbearably bright.
