Every family has its secret, the question is how well it is kept. Dogtooth presents a seemingly perfectly happy family; parents with three teenage children – one son and two daughters – live in the suburbs in a spacious mansion with a swimming pool and garden. A high wall separating the house from the world creates a barrier that the three young people never cross. Parents tell them that serious dangers await them outside, one of them being... a cat that can be scared away by barking.

When a dogtooth drops, the teenagers will leave the estate. In the meantime, they study, play and do sports on the estate premises, yet the language they use from another planet. To them, “highway” means a strong wind, “telephone” denotes salt, “zombie” is a small yellow flower, while “sea” is a chair. They see airplanes in the sky as toys and in the evenings they listen to Frank Sinatra, who – according to their parents – is their grandfather.

The children live in complete isolation, devoid of any contact with the outside world. They don’t use phones, don’t watch TV and have no access to computers. All their needs are satisfied on house premises; and once a week, their father brings in Christina, a security person in his factory, to satisfy his sons sexual needs. However, when one of the sisters watches Rocky on a VCR tape she received from Christina, she becomes uncertain as to whether what her parents are telling her about the world is really true. Protest, rebellion, and reactions spawning unexpected consequences are just a step away...
